South St. Louis generally refers to the area inside the city limits and south of I-44.
South St. Louis is one of the most diverse areas in all of the greater
St. Louis area. However, western south city is predominantly white, eastern south city is predominantly black, and the area in between is very diverse. In recent years, South St. Louis has also been home for many immigrants and refugees.South St. Louis contains many sub-neighborhoods, with their own sub-cultures, but they all combine together to form the culture of St. Louis. The heart of St. Louis culture is found in south city. Many of South St. Louis' residents come from generations and generations of South St. Louisans.
Many popular foods such as
frozen custard ,toasted ravioli ,St. Louis-style pizza ,gooey butter cake , and The Saint Paul Sandwich all originated here. Ted Drewes is a popular tourist destination in western south city as well as a hot spot for the locals. St. Louis style pizza is made with a thin crust and provel cheese. Some people say it is somewhat of an acquired taste. Also, thanks toThe Hill (an Italian/American neighborhood in South St. Louis) St. Louis/Italian food exist. You will have to visit one of The Hill's many sub or pasta places to truly understand. Also, residing in South St. Louis is theAnheuser Busch Brewery.Other popular places to visit in South St. Louis include
