- Artgal mac Cathail
Artgal mac Cathail(d.791) [all dates per "The Chronology of the Irish Annals", Daniel P. McCarthy] was a King of
Connacht from theUí Briúin branch of theConnachta . He was the son ofCathal mac Muiredaig Muillethan(d.735), a previous king and brother ofDub-Indrecht mac Cathail (d.768). [Francis J.Byrne, "Irish Kings and High-Kings", Table 20] He was of the Síl Cathail sept of the Ui Briun and ruled from 777-782.In 777 The
Ui Fiachrach who are from now on excluded from the throne slaughtered the Calraige. In 778 Artgal slaughtered theUi Maine at the Battle of Mag Dairben.In 780 the third enforcement of the law of Saint Commán of
Roscommon and the abbot Áedán was imposed on the three Connachta. [ the second occurred in 772 and the first is unknown] Artgal abdicated in 782 and went on a pilgramage toIona the following year where he died in 791.His son
Cináed mac Artgail (d.792) was also a king of Connacht.Notes
