Swampfest

The Swampfest is an annual musical festival that showcases Palmerston North bands. It occurs during New Zealand Music Month and is the only one of its kind in the city, showcasing multiple bands over various nights. Swampfest is known for showcasing up-and-coming as well as established artists, all from the Palmerston North area. The majority of music played is of the Rock genre however Punk, Ska, Hip hop, Metal, Pop and Emo have all featured in the past.

The current form of the festival is held at the Globe Theatre in Palmerston North with four acts performing each night for three nights.

The festival is named after Palmerston North's primordial origins as a swamp.

Location

Swampfests in 2004 and 2005 were held at The Guv'nors Tavern. The Swampfest in 2006 was held at at The Globe Theatre, Palmerston North. The Swampfest is now being held primarily at The Globe Theatre, Palmerston North, as well as some portions taking place at Palmerston North's 'Bar Mode'. Workshops held as part of the event most commonly occur at The Stomach, a local musical venue.

Organisation

The festival is organised primarily by local music venue co-ordinator 'Craig Black' (co-ordinator of Creative Sounds, The Stomach). Creative Sounds is the main organiser behind the event and makes sure the event runs as a smooth and enjoyable weekend.

History

The festival began in 2004 with 8 bands over two nights. [ [http://www.nzmusician.co.nz/index.php/ps_pagename/article/pi_articleid/380 NZ Musician Magazine ] ] This was held at The Guv'nors Tavern. Following the success of the first event, Swampfest '05 featured 12 bands over three nights (this being the general form of the festival now). It now features many more side shows to the main three night event and also includes workshops and swapmeets.
