Zero Footprint Applications
- Zero Footprint Applications
Zero Footprint Applications (ZFAs, also called Zero Footprint Clients orZero Footprint Software) refers to computer applications which do notrequire end users to install any software. Examples include most webbased applications such as Webmail. The term is oftenused for a new generation of mobile device applications which runentirely embedded within the existing application framework of thedevice, such as a web browser, Java (programming language) or acombination of the two.
Drivers for Zero Footprint Application adoption
Zero Footprint Applications provide advantages for both theapplication service provider and the end users. End users mostlybenefit from better accessibility to the application and ease ofuse. Application providers can control the user interface, forexample, for branding purposes, and can control software updates fromthe network. Another major driver of Zero Footprint Applications arecorporate and Government environments, where end users are oftenprohibited from installing any applications on their PCs orLaptops. In such environments, the deployment of Zero Footprintapplications is often much simpler compared to traditionalapplications which require PC installation because the former can bereleased immediately while the latter typically requires certificationand security reviews. Zero Footprint applications are not free ofsecurity concerns, though such concerns are typically much smaller andeasier to handle compared to traditional applications.
Disadvantages of Zero Footprint Applications
The main disadvantages are limitations in performance and restrictedaccess to low-level resources. Zero Footprint Applications thereforeare not well suited for certain specialized applications. Also, ZeroFootprint Applications typically require an on-line Internetconnection to be available at all times. Even though technology existsto allow such applications to be started once and then continue to beusable even if Internet connection is lost, most applications do notprovide this property.
