Maruthamunai is a village in the Ampara district of the south-eastern region of Sri lanka.
Maruthamunai was one of the villages most severely affected by the Indian Ocean Tsunami on December 26, 2004.[1] The disaster killed 922 residents of the village and displaced 11086. Previous to the disaster the population of the village was officially 17393. In addition to over 1300 homes, many public buildings were destroyed by the tsunami. The area is rebuilding.
Maruthamunai was a village that is mostly dominated by Tamil Speaking Muslims,[2] although there are a few other Religions. The people of this town were said to be descended from great Arab merchants (the moors) who came to trade with the Tamil Folk and married them. That is how the religion of Islam was founded in the Small Village of Maruthamunai.
