INDRA INDIA and RUSSIAN Naval Exercise

INDRA is bi-annual naval exercise between India and Russia. This exercise was started in 2003. The exercise was part of an Overseas Deployment (OSD) to the South East and East Asian regions.The exercise, primarily aimed at enhancing mutually beneficial cooperative engagement between the navies of the two countries, was christened INDRA. INDRA exercise includes surface live ammunition firing, air defense and anti-submarine warfare maneuvers. The naval units will also practice operations related to maintaining maritime order and countering piracy, terrorism, and drug smuggling. Story Behind INDRA

The end of the Cold War resulted in a decline, rather a near total absence of the Russian naval presence in the Indian Ocean. It took almost a decade for the Russian Navy to visit the Indian Ocean in 2001. A small but a powerful contingent of naval ships comprising anti-submarine ships, escorted by a tanker visited Mumbai in 2001. In April 2003, nine warships of the Russian Federation navy set sail from Sevastopol in the Black Sea and Pacific naval bases for the Indian Ocean. The ships did not enter the Persian Gulf setting aside speculation that Moscow may be attempting to pressurize the US-led coalition attack on Iraq. The Russian naval detachments engaged in a number of exercises with the Indian Navy. Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov made a proposal for joint naval exercises in 2002 and New Delhi had agreed for the same
