March 31 ,1884 in Jonesboro,Louisiana – diedJanuary 23 1966 in Alexandria,Virginia ) was amayor ofBoise, Idaho , and a United States Senator fromIdaho .Pope graduated from
Louisiana Polytechnic Institute in 1906 and from the law department of theUniversity of Chicago in 1909. He then moved to Boise, Idaho, to practice law, and served as city attorney of Boise, assistant attorney general of Idaho, and a member of the board of education of Boise.Pope served as mayor of Boise from 1929 to 1933. He was elected as a Democrat to the
United States Senate in 1932, defeating Republican incumbentJohn W. Thomas . In 1938 Pope was defeated for reelection in the Democratic primary by Congressman D. Worth Clark. Before he was a member of theNye Committee .In 1939 Pope was appointed a director of the
Tennessee Valley Authority by PresidentFranklin D. Roosevelt and served in that capacity until 1951. He continued to practice law and serve on several boards inTennessee after that.Pope is buried in Lynnhurst Cemetery in
Knoxville, Tennessee .
