The last
census conducted1991 placed the population of the Posušje municipality at 26,659 residents, of which 99.47% wereCroats . The town itself had 3,827 residents with 99.89% being Croats.History
There has been settlement in the area since pre-Croatian times when the
Illyrians inhabited the region. The Croats arrived to the region in the eight century.Historical records first mention Posušje in
1378 when it was still part of the Croatian Kingdom. Soon after it became a part of the Bosnian kingdom. The Ottoman invasion of Bosnia began in1463 , and by1493 Posušje fell under Turkish rule. In1878 , Ottoman rule ended with the Congress of Berlin establishingAustro-Hungarian rule in the region. AfterWorld War I , Posušje was part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia where it was inLittoral Banovina (province). In1939 , the banovinas were merged and theBanovina of Croatia was formed. From1941 to1945 the town was part of theIndependent State of Croatia .With the end of
World War II , Posušje was once again in the union of Yugoslavia as part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In1992 the republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina gained independence, but was the scene of intense ethnic conflict until1995 . The town was known for its folklore festival "Zvuci s Kamena" which began in
1975 . The festival has not been held since the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s, but there are plans to once again stage it annually starting in2005 or2006 .Posušje is home to the football club
