C/1652 Y1 was a comet discovered by Jan van Riebeeck by naked eye. Spotted on December 17, 1652, it was the first comet discovered from South Africa. As of June 2008 the comet was about 280 A.U. from the Sun (very approximate due to poorly determined orbit). [NASA.
