- Mauh
Mauh (or Mow) is a relatively unknown card game that is passed from one friend to another with a few varying rules. The cause of these variations is a lack of the proper rules and laws.
One set rules are as follows:
Each player is dealt seven cards. One card is placed face up. Play begins to the left of the dealer. Players take turns matching either the suit or the number in the manner of "Uno." For example, if a seven of clubs is showing, it is legal to play any club or any seven. Play continues until someone has run out of cards and declares "Mow!" If you do not have a playable card you may draw one card, this ends your turn. You may not continue drawing until a playable card is reached.
What makes this game an interesting variant is because of the addition and enforcement of rules. When the game begins a few basic rules are in effect:
1. When playing a heart, you must say "booty."
2. When playing a spade, you must declare what spade it is (seven of spades, ace of spades, etc.)
3. When receiving a penalty card you must say "thank you" before picking up the card.
4. When reduced to one card yo must announce "last card."
5. When playing the last card in your hand, you must perform all relevent actions before declaring "Mow!"When a breach in the rules is made, another player places a card in front of the offender and states the general infraction.
For Example:
Penalty for Failure to perform an action
Penalty for Playing out of turn
or simply "Penalty for cheating" when someone enforces a rule improperly.
Penalty for Delay of game (if someone doesn't know it is their turn or takes too long)So far Mow seems fairly straightforward. It becomes truly fantastic after the end of each round. The winner decides who shuffles, who deals, who will begin play, and in what direction play will begin. Furthermore, players may not pick up their cards until the winner gives the permission. This is because the winner is responible to create a new rule. The rule is not announced but the creater must enforce the new rule on themselves and others.
ideas for simple rules are:
all aces are treated as "Skip" cards
all twos are "Wild" and you may announce the new suit
when playing a club you must say a phrase or perform an action.
all even (non-face) cards reverse the order of play. These rules are cumulative for the duration of the mow game. Not one hand, the whole game until play stops. Imagine the hilarity when after playing their second to last card someone must say "King of Spades, I am the King of the land of stench, last card!" then play reverses. The next person is penalized for delay of game (because they didn't realize it was their turn) then are penalized again when they forget to say "Thank you." Then through gritted teeth say "Thank you" before playing a king of hearts saying "I am king of the land of stench.....Booty!"
There is no final winner for the game of Mow, it is played for the enjoyment. The game ends when enough players decide the rules are too silly and complex to continue.
