American Viticultural Area aroundSeneca Lake inUpstate New York . Thewine appellation is entirely contained within the largerFinger Lakes AVA , and includes portions of Ontario, Schuyler, Seneca, and Yates counties. Seneca Lake is aglacial lake about convert|35|mi|km|0 long and up to convert|600|ft|m|-1 deep. The lake does not freeze in winter, and acts as a giant heat storage unit for thevineyard s surrounding the lake, extending thegrowing season . The most commercially importantgrape variety in the region isRiesling , although a wide variety of "Vitis vinifera " andFrench hybrid grapes are grown.References
