SJMS is a private boarding military school for male students from grades 6 to 12. The faculty and staff at St. John's are dedicated to helping a student develop his leadership and academic skills in a structured environment. Our mission is to provide each Cadet with the opportunity to grow spiritually, morally, intellectually, and physically in a structured environment. Our specialty is developing that hidden potential that we believe lies in every boy.

The school has an Army JROTC program and the Corps of Cadets earned a 997 out of 1,000 on their last formal inspection which was held on April 23, 2008. The Class of 2008 is considered by many as the best military as well as academic school year St. John's has ever seen. The average formal inspection score since 1997 is 997. The JROTC Department also sponsors the rifle and drill teams. The indoor rifle range is state of the art and one of the best in the Midwest.

Through the foresight and efforts of an Episcopal Bishop, the Right Reverend Elisha Smith Thomas and a group of concerned Salina, Kansas businessmen, St. John's came into being. These men recognized the need for a disciplined educational and living environment for young boys and undertook the task of establishing a military school to be operated under church auspices.

On October 28, 1887, The Episcopal Military Institute purchased a portion of a fertile Kansas homestead and St. John's Military School was born. Instead of producing wheat, this acreage has, for more than 120 years, helped to raise young men.
