Akira Fujishima

Akira Fujishima

is a Japanese chemist, professor emeritus, University of Tokyo. [http://www.nanonet.go.jp/english/mailmag/2005/044a.html "Discovery and applications of photocatalysis —Creating a comfortable future by making use of light energy"] ]

He is known for his significant contributions in discovery and research of photocatalytic and superhydrophilic properties of titanium dioxide. In 1967 While working on his Ph.D. under the supervision of professor Kenichi Honda he discovered the photocatalytic water decomposition (water photolysis) in the process in the TiO2 surface later called Honda-Fujishima effect. Discovery of self-cleaning properties of TiO2 by the group under his supervision have brought revolution in ceramic, glass, and other industries (see e.g., self-cleaning glass).
