UCLA Gambling Studies Program

The UCLA Gambling Studies Program (UGSP) is a program at the University of California, Los Angeles that performs research studies regarding pathological and problem gambling. As of February, 2008, there are two major active studies. The first is a study that compares levels of impulsivity in pathological gamblers to those in non-pathological gamblers. The second study analyzes the efficacy of a self-help workbook designed to assist pathological gamblers learn more about their disorder and to understand ways to cope with gambling urges. A cognitive-behavioral treatment manual for mental health therapists treating pathological gamblers is also being created and will be tested in a clinical trial in the near future. This manual is being created as a way to help guide mental health and substance abuse therapists in the techniques of cognitive-behavioral therapy as it applies to gambling addiction.
