Volker David Kirchner (born
June 25 ,1942 inMainz ) is a German composer, violinist, and violist.Kirchner studied at the Peter Cornelius Conservatory in
Mainz from 1956-69 underGünter Kehr andGünter Raphael . Following this he studied withBernd Alois Zimmermann at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik inCologne from 1959-63, and then underTibor Varga at the Hochschule für Musik inDetmold from 1964-65). Kirchner played injazz ensembles in Cologne, and played in several high-level ensembles as a violist, including the Frankfurt RSO from 1966 to 1988. He moved to Mainz and became a freelance composer in 1989.He has done works for musical theater, the
Bavarian State Opera ,Staatsoper Hannover ,Katholikentag , etc. Among awards he has won the 1994 Rheingau Musikpreis and the 2007Peter Cornelius Medal.Cello pieces
