Kresna Gorge

The Kresna Gorge is a spectacular steep valley in southwestern Bulgaria. It was formed by the Struma River, which stems from the Vitosha mountains and flows into the Aegean Sea. The gorge is rich in biodiversity which may be endangered by the project to build the Struma Motorway which is a part of Trans European Corridor No. 4.

The Kresna Gorge was the arena of a battle between Bulgaria and Greece during the 1913 Second Balkan War. The Greek army was effectively trapped in the valley but the Bulgarians were unable to signal their victory to the Bulgarian negotiators in Bucharest, where a peace treaty unfavourable to Bulgaria's territorial aspirations was signed.Fact|date=June 2008
