- Kresna Gorge
The Kresna Gorge is a spectacular steep valley in southwestern
Bulgaria . It was formed by theStruma River , which stems from theVitosha mountains and flows into theAegean Sea . The gorge is rich inbiodiversity which may be endangered by the project to build the Struma Motorway which is a part of Trans European Corridor No. 4.The Kresna Gorge was the arena of a battle between Bulgaria and
Greece during the 1913Second Balkan War . The Greek army was effectively trapped in the valley but the Bulgarians were unable to signal their victory to the Bulgarian negotiators inBucharest , where a peace treaty unfavourable to Bulgaria's territorial aspirations was signed.Fact|date=June 2008External links
