Sandoval was signed as an undrafted
free agent by theSeattle Mariners in 2000. He began his professional career in 2003 with their Class A affiliate, theWisconsin Timber Rattlers . In 2004, he advanced to their Class A-AdvancedInland Empire 66ers . He was promoted again in 2005 to the Double-ASan Antonio Missions .On
February 4 ,2006 , Sandoval was dining in a restaurant in the Dominican Republic when an argument between the establishment's bouncer and a drunken patron broke out. The drunken man left the restaurant, but returned with a shotgun. The blast hit Sandoval in the upper torso and face. Three shotgun pellets entered his right eye. He underwent two surgeries to save the eye, though it was left permanently blind. This injury kept him out of the entire 2006 season.Geoff, Baker.
