*KUKI-ETHNIC a conglomeration of tribes indigenious to the contiguous regions of presentday northeast India, Sagaing Division of Myanmar and Chitagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh, speaking different but mutually intelligible dialects. The major sub-tribes are Thadou, Paite, Hmar, Aimol, Anal, Chiru, Baite, Simte, Gangte, Vaiphei, Lamkang, Kom, Mate, Zou,etc. The Kuki people claim they are a sovereign nation before the advent of British Empire. They fought the British to resist subjugation between 1917-19 in what the British recorded as the Kuki Rebellion. The Kuki movement for restoration of their lost sovereignty and freedom is spearheaded by the Kuki National Organization, a transborder insurgent movement based in what the KNO calls Zalengam or Land of Freedom situated in the Indo-Myanmar Border region.
