Bennion progressed through Wrexham’s youth setup and signed as a part-time professional with the club in September 1959."Player Memories", Chester City v. Wycombe Wanderers matchday programme; 2/1/1995; p.15] He went on to make more than 50 league appearances over the next four years but his opportunities became limited after the signing of
Arfon Griffiths in 1962. The following season saw him agree to join Halifax Town, but the move collapsed and Stan joined Chester in time for the 1963–64 season as part of a swap deal withBill Myerscough .
