Sim Hun (
Hangul : 심훈Hanja : 沈熏; 1901 – 1936) was a Korean writer. Sim Hun was pen name, and his birth name was Sim Dae-Sup (Hangul : 심대섭Hanja : 沈大燮). His most famous book is "Sangloksu" ("The Evergreen Tree"). Another of his novels, "Mask Dance,"(1926) was the first Korean novel to be made into a movie.His Life
He was born in Seoul in 1901. In 1919, he was sent to jail because he had joined the
March 1st Movement against Japanese rule over Korea. After he was released from jail, his school, Kyunggi High School, expelled him. (In July 2005, the school gave him a posthumous honorary diploma).He went to China University in 1920, but left in 1922 to organize a literary association called Guekmunhwe. In 1926, Donga newspaper published his story "Talhwe." He was fired because of his membership in a Revolutionary Writer's Group. In 1935 he won an award for his novel "Sangloksu." He used the prize money to create the Sanglok Academy. He died in 1936.
An anthology of his works, "That Day is Coming," was published in 1949. A seven-volume series of his books, "Sim Hun's Books," came out in 1952 and a three-volume series, "Sim Hun's Complete Works," in 1996.
