Haering came to
West Virginia University in 1986. Haering's freshman season, he totaled 9 tackles. The next season, 1987, Haering saw more time as he totaled 90 tackles and an interception.In 1988, Haering led a stout defense of the undefeated Mountaineer team that traveled to the
Fiesta Bowl , only to lose toNotre Dame for the national championship. Haering made up one of the greatest linebacking corps in school history - consisting ofRenaldo Turnbull , Theron Ellis, freshmanSteve Grant , and Lonnie Brockman. Haering totaled 126 tackles, three sacks, four tackles for losses, three interceptions, and three forced fumbles. His season was one of the greatest defensive seasons in school history,In his final collegiate season, 1989, Haering added a career-high 185 tackles, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and one interception.
Haering is now a head
