The Revd Arthur Perceval Purey Cust (1828-1916) was an
Anglican priest who served asDean of York for over 30 years in the 19th and 20th centuries. Subsequent pastoral appointments in Cheddington,Buckinghamshire andReading lead to him being appointed anhonorary Canon ofChrist Church, Oxford ;Archdeacon ofBuckingham ; and, finally,to the Deanery at York [The Times , Thursday, Apr 08, 1880; pg. 5; Issue 29850; col F The New Dean Of York] . For the next 36 years he meticulously catalogued the Minster’s heritage [”The Heraldry of York Minster”Cust,APP: Leeds, Richard Jackson, 1890] and died in harness in his 88th year [ The Times, Monday, Feb 21, 1916; pg. 11; Issue 41095; col B] .
