- USS Vernon County (LST-1161)
The USS "Vernon County" (LST-1161) was a U.S. Navy, Terrebonne Parish class Landing Ship, Tank that was laid down on April 14, 1952 at Pascagoula, Mississippi, by Ingalls Shipbuilding Corp. and launched on November 25 1952. The vessel was later loaned, and subsequently sold, to Venezuala and renamed "Amazonas" (T-21).
The Vernon County was the first LST to beach at Diego Garcia atoll in 1971.
The Vernon County was loaned to Venezuela on June 29, 1973 and renamed "Amazonas" (T-21) and later purchased by Venezuala in December 1977. Grounded 6 Aug 1980. Recommissioned following repairs.
