Michael Krupa

Michael Krupa (born April 15, 1915) is a Polish World War II veteran and author.

Biography

Michael Krupa was born on April 15, 1915 in Rudnik, Poland to a Polish father and an Austrian mother. He was part of a large family of seven boys and two girls.

Krupa was accepted into a Jesuit monastery as a teen, but left before taking his final vows and joined the Polish army. Following the German invasion of Poland, he was arrested in Soviet-occupied eastern Poland. He was tortured in Lubyanka prison and sentenced to ten years in the Pechora Gulag. He escaped the gulag and reached safety in Afghanistan.

After his escape, Krupa was selected to join the Polish Second Department (secret service), then under partial control of the British Secret Intelligence Service. His service is listed in the 1985 book "Cichociemni" by Jędrzej Tucholski as a cadet sergeant officer codenamed 'Ciupaga' ('Chopper' - a traditional Polish mountain walking stick).
