Thomas Birch (artist)

Thomas Birch, American portrait and marine painter; born in London, England, in 1779 ; died in Philadelphia, January 3, 1851.

He came to the U. S. in 1793 and painted portraits in Philadelphia until about 1807, when he took up marine-painting. Some of his works represent naval battles of the war of 1812.
