Proteas EKA AEL is one of the founding members of Cyprus Basketball Federation. With coach one of the schoolteachers of the sport in Cyprus, Michalaki Nikolaidi, AEL took part in the first official championship in 1967. It is established as the “queen” of Cyprus Basketball. Other than the 13 championships, the 8 Cups and the 6 Super Cups, AEL is the only Cypriot team that has ever won a European title (Regional Challenge Cup, South Conference 2003). In 2007, for the fifth consecutive year, the team won the Cypriot championship, becoming the first Cypriot side to do so.
