The Maimarkt-Gelände is the largest regional consumer exhibition of Germany, which always begins on last Saturday in April and lasts for eleven days. The traditionally last day is therefore Maimarkt Tuesday.
History
The May market has a long history beginning in the year 1613 in Mannheim, Germany (when the city was only six years old) after Pfalzgraf Johann II of Zweibrücken granted Market privileges. The market was originally used for shopkeepers and cattle dealers.
In the 20th Century, May market was moved to the marketplace under the arcades of a department store in the city center.
1876 were separated the Schaubudenmesse from the actual market and shifted on the old person measuring position.
1892 moved a part of the Maimarkt into the again opened slaughterhouse. In the year 1900 the remainder followed. Additionally to the old cattle and horse market now also agricultural devices, as well as butcher's shop and dairy articles were issued.
After the Second World War held the Maimarkt for the Second World War 1949 first in the meeting building Rose garden, later again in the slaughterhouse off.
1962 it was finally shifted of the Mannheimer exhibition company on the peace place opposite Luisenpark and with extended offers to its current form led.
Since 1985, the event takes place east of the city in the Mühlfeld, after the May market the new building Federal state museum for technology and work yield had.
In the year 1989 as the first firm exhibition hall the May market hall (7500m ² surface) was built, which is all year round used and with Popkonzerten up to 12.000 visitors place offers. Further firm installations are the gläserne Studio SWR as well as several administration buildings at the main entrance.
2005 took place in connection with the building SAP arena the connection to suburban traffic in Mannheimer streetcar net.
Infrastructure

In the May market area, legendary open air concerts took place in the past.
It has also hosted The Monsters of Rock Festival on August 31, 1986 and September 1, 1990.
