Anine Frölich

Anine Frölich

Anine Marie Magdalene Frölich, (1762-1784), was a Danish ballet dancer, one of the first professional native ballet dancers in Danemark and a prima donna within the Danish ballet in her days. Chronologically, she can be seen as the first native star within the Danish ballet.

Biography

Anine Frölich was in 1771 accepted as a student in the ballet school of the court-theater, which had been founded in Christiansborg Palace by Pierre Laurent of the Frecnh theatre troupe in 1767; it was merged with the Royal Danish Theatre in 1772. When she debuted in 1773 she made a success with her beauty, body-plastic and mimiqcue, which separated her from the more stiff mimiqcue adpoted by most of her rivals in the tropue.

In 1775, the Italian dancer Vincenzo Galleotti arived to Denmark and was made ballet- master. He reformed the ballet in Denmark and created a new enthusiasm for it among the public. Until then, Danish ballet had ben dance for the sake of dance itself- it had not involved actual plays, which were now introduced by Galeotti, who made Frölich the star of his ballets. With her expressie way of dancing she was pefect for the ballets he directed, and she danced the main parts of his dances with great success and became the ruling ballerina of the Danish ballet. One ofher most known parts were in the ballet "Den forlodte Dido" in 1777.

She and Galeotti also became lovers, but the relationship ended unhappily, and her health also deteriorated because of overexhaustion; in 1784, she collapsed during a performance and was carried home, were she died after a short but successful career.
