Finabel is a European organisation which has as its purpose to promote
interoperability and cooperation in thearmy area. [ [http://espace-finabel.eu/public/images/stories/Finabel/Finabel_UK-midres.pdf Finabel information folder: "Finabel: Contributing to European Army Interoperability since 1953"] ] The organisation was founded in 1953, and the name FINBEL was created as an acronym of the initial letter of the initial member states (France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg) It became FINABEL when also Germany (Allemagne) joined up. Later, it has been kept as a proper noun, written in lower-case, when membership further expanded. Finabel was founded by armies which belonged to bothNATO andWestern European Union .As of 2008, membership consists of 15 countries:
Belgium ,Cyprus ,Finland ,France ,Germany ,Greece ,Italy ,Luxembourg ,Netherlands ,Poland ,Portugal ,Romania ,Slovakia ,Spain , and theUnited Kingdom . Finabel has as its stated ambition to bring in all 27 member states of theEuropean Union within the organisation.Finabel is under the control of the member states' army chiefs of staff, and the organisation's work agenda consists of studies and working groups.
