The Aspropyrgos
oil refinery is of a complex type and one of the most modern in Europe [http://www.images-words.com/greece/power.htm] [http://www.ppeppd07.chemeng.ntua.gr/main.php?helpet] . Operated byHellenic Petroleum Group. Situated nearAspropyrgos , a suburb ofAthens . with nominal annual refining capacity of 7.5 million tons (135,000 bpd), it is the largest one inGreece .It has a large number of refining units and capability to convert heavy oil products to white products of a higher added value. These conversion units, with a very high complexity index, constitute the refinery’s main advantage. The Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) is the main conversion unit, with a nominal capacity of convert|45000|oilbbl/d|m3/d. The unit processes atmospheric residue and vacuum gas oil (VGO) of the Aspropyrgos & Thessaloniki refineries, to produce higher value white products.
With the upgrade of the
Naphtha Hydrodesulfurization and reforming units and with the operation of the TAME unit, the refinery is in a position to produce high octanegasoline with strict environmental specifications (10 ppm S) which supplies to the entire market and covers 80% of the total Group production in gasoline products. With the upgrade of thediesel desulphurization unit and the distribution network, it is in a position to produce Auto Diesel (of 50 and 10 ppm S).The Aspropyrgos refinery owns a large private harbour, has modern
oil tanker and rail terminals, an extensive crude oil distributionpipeline network from Pachi –Megara , and a distribution pipeline for finished and semi-finished products from and to the Elefsina refinery. It is also connected, through a fuel pipeline, to the Eleftherios VenizelosAthens International Airport , having the main responsibility for fuel supply. It is very flexible as far as the production, the storage and the distribution of all types of finished products are concerned.
Taking into account future environmental requirements, which are binding from the year 2008, the Aspropyrgos refinery implements new projects to secure its participation in covering the market needs.
