USS Guardian (MCM-5)

USS "Guardian" (MCM-5), an sclass|Avenger|mine countermeasures ship, is the second U.S. Navy ship of that name.

"Guardian" was laid down on 8 May 1985 by the Peterson Builders Inc., Sturgeon Bay, Wisc.; launched on 20 June 1987 ; and commissioned on 16 December 1989 .

As of May 8, 2008, "Guardian" is commanded by Lieutenant Commander Theodore E. Essenfeld, and part of Mine Countermeasures Squadron 1. She is assigned to the 7th Fleet, and forward-deployed to Sasebo, Japan.

In late November 2007, "Guardian" and fellow minesweeper USS|Patriot|MCM-7 sought refueling and refuge from an approaching storm in Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour, but were denied entry without explanation by the People's Republic of China.Citation
