- USS Guardian (MCM-5)
USS "Guardian" (MCM-5), an sclass|Avenger|mine countermeasures ship, is the second U.S. Navy ship of that name.
"Guardian" was laid down on
8 May 1985 by thePeterson Builders Inc., Sturgeon Bay, Wisc.; launched on20 June 1987 ; and commissioned on16 December 1989 .As of May 8, 2008 , "Guardian" is commanded by Lieutenant Commander Theodore E. Essenfeld, and part ofMine Countermeasures Squadron 1 . She is assigned to the 7th Fleet, and forward-deployed to Sasebo,Japan .In late November 2007, "Guardian" and fellow minesweeper USS|Patriot|MCM-7 sought refueling and refuge from an approaching storm in
Hong Kong 'sVictoria Harbour , but were denied entry without explanation by thePeople's Republic of China .Citation
