Liam Lloyd - Thirtysomething actor/playwright, born in
Liverpool .Prolific playwright who was resident dramatist at the
Liverpool Playhouse Theatre (1992-93) where his credits include the smash hit musical "Imagine (1992),"" "The Dark Side (1993), Accommodation Only (1993)" and "The Tangled Web (1995)."The son of a builder and barmaid of Irish stock (his mother reputedly descended from a long line of Spanish gypsies) his schooldays were troubled. He left school with no qualifications and tried various careers in retail, joinery and gardening whilst continuing to write. Winning a prize in a
Daily Mirror creative writing contest at the age of 15 spurred him on.His early career was blighted by bouts of alcoholism and brawling. Deported from the
Isle of Man in 1987 he decided to pursue a career as an actor and playwright.A former member of both the
Everyman and Playhouse Youth Theatres where he helped devise many shows including a tour of Hungary with the popular "Sweat" (1988), he continued to act and write for several years, touring Britain and eventually turning professional. He subsequently appeared on stage and screen in numerous acting roles whilst writing and producing his own documentary and film productions and helping develop local talent as a drama tutor. Was appointed
Writer-In-Residence at the Playhouse in June 1992 after one of his scripts captured the interest of theTraverse Theatre in Edinburgh and was recommended to director Ramin Gray in Liverpool. He was immediately assigned the task of writing a new script with director Ian Kellgren for the musical "Imagine: The Story of John Lennon", starringMark McGann . Four weeks later the show was breaking box office records. Liam tried to keep his name off the credits claiming it was not one of his better efforts.Described as an explosive new voice his career seemed destined to flourish, but was always over-shadowed by a seemingly self-destructive nature and a total disregard for the industry. He spurned numerous offers to write for television and despite writing over 50 stage shows and commissions before the age of 30 and enlisting the help of (and later dispensing with) one of England's leading literary agents, he remains one of Liverpool's uncelebrated artists.
Teetotal since 1993 he has added photography, film-making, poetry, music, foreign languages and novel writing to his list of interests and career endeavours.
