The Black Thunder Coal Mine is a surface
coal mine in theU.S. state ofWyoming , located at coord|43|40|N|105|18|W|display=inline,title in thePowder River Basin which contains one of the largest deposits of coal in the world. Black Thunder is the most productive mine in theUnited States and one of the largest in the world. The mine was opened in 1977, and run by
ARCO Coal until it was acquired in 1998 byArch Coal [cite web|url=http://www.mining-technology.com/projects/thunder/|title=Mining Technology - Black Thunder Coal Mine, USA|accessdate=2008-01-25] . For most of its existence, Black Thunder has been the largest mine in the country, but it was briefly surpassed by the nearby North Antelope Rochelle Mine. It regained the title again in 2004 after Arch Coal purchased the North Rochelle mine next door.References
