The
Roman Catholic Church restored the historicalDiocese of Dunkeld (with different boundaries from the pre-Reformation diocese), on 4 March, 1878, by decree ofPope Leo XIII . Dunkeld is one of the suffragan sees in the archiepiscopal province of St. Andrews and Edinburgh, and includes the counties of Perth,Angus , Clackmannan, Kinross, and the northern part ofFife . The diocesan cathedral is dedicated toSaint Andrew and is located inDundee rather than Dunkeld; Dundee is the residence of the great majority of the Catholics of the diocese. The cathedral chapter, erected in 1895, consists of a provost and eight canons. The present bishop is the Rt. Rev.
Vincent Paul Logan who assumed office on 26th of February 1981. According to the Bishop's Conference, in 2001 Dunkeld Diocese had 46 priests and 11permanent deacon s serving 38 parishes, with a total Catholic population of some 45,000.Institutions
The diocese has numerous primary schools throughout its area. The presence of three secondary schools (
Lawside Academy , St. John's Secondary and St. Saviour's Secondary) within the city ofDundee testifies to the size of the Catholic population, though these schools welcome pupils from religious traditions other than their own. There are also Catholic secondaries in Perth (St. Columba),Dunfermline (also St. Columba) and the newest, dedicated to St. Andrew, was opened inKirkcaldy during 2004. There is one independent school for girls:Kilgraston , which is situated inBridge of Earn , near Perth and run by the Sisters of theSociety of the Sacred Heart .There are 6 institutes of religious life for men: The
