Aynuk and Ayli

Aynuk and Ayli

"'Aynuk and Ayli" are two mythical characters from the Black Country in central England that figure in a large number of local jokes [ [http://www.bbc.co.uk/blackcountry/features/2002/12/accents/black_country_jokes.shtml BBC - Black Country Features - Black Country Jokes ] ] .

One of them lived at Pig on the Wall Cottage, Lower Gornal.

Aynuk and Ayli were personified by a comedy duo consisting of John Plant (7 December 1951-21 November 2006) and Alan Smith (born 1935).

They performed across central England from 1984, and performed alongside comedy greats such as Harry Harrison, gaining iconic status across the region.

Plant died in November 2006 after a short illness, two weeks before what would have been his 55th birthday, marking the end of an era for one of British comedy's most popular duos of modern times. He was buried in St Andrew's Parish Church near his lifelong home in Netherton, near Dudley.
