Ballymacelligott Handball Club

Ballymacelligott Handball Club is situated five miles east of Tralee Co. Kerry Ireland. The club was founded in 1950 and enjoyed notable success for decades with the victories of great players including the legendary McEllistrim brothers Murty and Roundy.

It all began in 1950 when Fr. Denis Griffin C.C. organised voluntary labour to build a handball court on land provided by the late Mr. Jimmy McEllistrim. The court was an open 60 X 30 four walled structure with a gallery which had accommodation for 200 spectators. From its earliest years it became a popular venue for Inter-County Championship games. In the sixties and seventies, Ballymac's fame in handball circles rivalled such venues as Talbot's Inch, Croke Park, Ballymore Eustace, Tuamgraney, Ballymote and Kells. A major advance was achieved in 1968 when the court was roofed and so ended our worries about the vagaries of the weather. Yet another milestone was reached in 1976 when a new International Regulation Size 40 X 20 court was added.

Today the club has a strong youth set-up with players from aged 8 and upwards learning the skills of the game.

Major success has come to the club in the Ladies game, with Maria Daly and Ashling Prendiville taking Senior All-Irelands in recent years.
