P2P-SIP

P2P-SIP is the combination of Peer-to-peer (P2P) networks and the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). This combination can improve survivability and scalability, as well as enabling new applications.

There are two ways of combining P2P and SIP: P2P over SIP, and SIP over P2P.

P2P over SIP

In P2P over SIP, peer-to-peer communications are implemented using SIP messaging.One implementation uses SIP REGISTER requests to join, build, and communicate between peer nodes in the P2P overlay network. This can be proved little effective causing delays in transport and poor scalability.Another reuses P2P algorithms known as Distributed Hash Tables (DHTs). This allows SIP to optimize transport schemes.

IP over P2P

In SIP over P2P, the SIP location service is replaced by P2P protocole.SIP would use the P2P layer for discovery and rendezvous. The search key in a general discovery and rendezvous mechanism for Internet communications would be a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI). This URI would be a name, and would require resolution to a particular device (URL) that must be performed in real time.
