footnotes =Andrea Ypsilanti (née "Andrea Dill",
8 April 1957 inRüsselsheim ) is a Germanpolitician .Political career
Ypsilanti is a member of the Hessian parliament and has been head of the
Hesse stateSPD since March 2003.In the Hesse state elections of 2008, she was the SPD's candidate for the position of
minister-president of Hesse. In the election her party received 36.7 per cent of the votes cast, 0.1 per cent less than theCDU , which has been ruling the state since 1999. Thus, the Hesse SPD came in second in this election, gaining the same number of representatives in the Hesse state parliament as the CDU. Overall, the public vote led to a deadlock in the state parliament, because neither the CDU and FDP nor the SPD and Greens had enough votes for a majority coalition. Ypsilanti ultimately decided to cooperate with the Left Party in order to be elected minister-president, but had to abandon the plan because at least one of her own delegates opposed the idea. Before the election Ypsilanti had promised on many occasions to never work together with the Left Party under any circumstance. In late August, she re-launched her attempts to become Minister-President by luring the Left Party with promises, in return for their support until 2013.
