Adam Wenceslaus, Duke of Cieszyn
- Adam Wenceslaus, Duke of Cieszyn
Adam Wacław ( _cs. Adam Václav, _de. Adam Wenzel) (12 December 1574 - 13 July 1617) was the Duke of Cieszyn. He was the son of Wacław III Adam, Duke of Cieszyn and Katarina Sidonia.
He spent his childhood on the court of elector of Saxony and youth probably in Vienna. Saxon experience made him a determined Protestant. He several times issued decrees aimed at liquidation of Catholicism in the duchy. Adam Wacław led expensive life and his debts were often paid by the towns and chivalry.
On 17 September 1595 he married Elisabeth, daughter of Gotthard Kettler, Duke of Courland. They had five children: three sons and two daughters.
He took part in the wars with Turks and also declared political sympathies towards Rudolf II, Austrian emperor. In 1610 he changed his religion to Catholic. Large part of the population of the duchy also shifted to Roman Catholicism according to the "cuius regio, eius religio" rule. However, Adam Wacław wasn't a fervent Catholic and didn't force his population to shift to the Catholic faith. [Panic 2002, 31.]
