Alfred Henry Garrod (
1846 -05-18 –1879 -10-17 ) was an Englishvertebrate zoologist .Garrod was born in
London , the eldest son of SirAlfred Baring Garrod (1819–1907) a physician atKing's College Hospital , who discovered the abnormaluric acid metabolism associated withgout . He was also the eldest brother ofArchibald Edward Garrod (1857–1936), an English physician who pioneered the field of inborn errors of metabolism.Academic history
He attended the
University College London andKing's College London for his studies and, in 1871, obtained a teaching position at theUniversity of Cambridge . From 1874 to 1879, Garrod taughtcomparative anatomy atKing's College London . In 1875, he was nominated as the FullerianProfessor ofPhysiology and Comparative Anatomy at theRoyal Institution , a position he held until 1878. Shortly after he was aggregated as a fellow to theRoyal Society in 1876. Garrod's main scientific interests werebird andruminant anatomy .He also was a contributor to the description of the
