*8 May - Battle of Farsetmore, fought near Letterkenny in Donegal, Shane O'Neill, chief of the O’Neills of Tyrone, is defeated and the O’Donnells free themselves from O’Neill overlordship.
*Shane O'Neill is killed by the MacDonnells near Cushendun [cite book | last=Moody, TW & Martin, FX (eds)| year=1967 |title=The Course of Irish History | publisher=The Mercier Press | location=Cork, Ireland | pages=p 371] . His severed head is sent to the government in Dublin and he is buried in Glenarm.
