Sealey began his career playing as an amateur for non-league side Warrington Town, before he moved to Liverpool in 1962 [cite web|url= http://www.lfchistory.net/player_profile.asp?player_id=409|title= John Sealey – Player Profile| publisher=LFChistory.net| accessdate=2008-01-17] . His solitary appearance came in Liverpool’s final game of the 1964–65 season. In June 1966, Sealey, John Bennett and
Alan Hignett all moved from Liverpool to Chester on free transfers [cite book | author=Chas Sumner | title=On the Borderline: The Official History of Chester City 1885-1997 | year=1997| pages= p.79 |id=ISBN 1-874427-52-6] . Sealey made his debut in the second league game of the season, a 3–0 home defeat by Bradford Park Avenue and played in the following two games [cite book | author=Chas Sumner | title=On the Borderline: The Official History of Chester City 1885-1997 | year=1997| pages= stats section |id=ISBN 1-874427-52-6] .
