Donat, Bishop of Dublin

Donat, Bishop of Dublin

Donat (died 1074) was the first bishop of Dublin to be appointed under Dublin's Danish kings. He is known also as Donatus, or by the Irish names Donagh and Dunán. The diocese was put on a regular basis, in 1038, at the request of Sigtrygg Silkbeard.

It has been traditionally said that Donat was consecrated by Æthelnoth, the Archbishop of Canterbury [ [http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/05171a.htm Catholic Encyclopedia: Dublin ] ] . This is now disputed, with scholars saying that his successor, Gilla Patráic, was the first to be consecrated in this way [M. Philpott, "Some Interactions between the English and Irish Churches", in Christopher Harper-Bill (editor), "Proceedings of the Battle Conference in Dublin, 1997", p. 192, "Anglo-Norman Studies" XX (1998).]
