Richard Bowker (British businessman)

Richard Bowker CBE is currently Chief executive officer of National Express Group [ [http://www.nationalexpressgroup.com/nx/oc/board/bowker Richard Bowker CBE ] ] . He attended Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, Blackburn, read Economics at Leicester University, and played as a professional session pianist for a year, after which he joined the London Underground as a Graduate Finance Trainee in 1989; in the course of his work with the Underground, he is credited with the launch of a new leasing system for trains in 1997 [ [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3407783.stm BBC NEWS | UK | Profile: Richard Bowker ] ] .

Bowker was appointed co-Chairman of Virgin Trains in 1997 & Commercial Director for the transport sector of the Virgin Group. He has also founded the transport consultancy Quasar Associated.

In 2001 he was appointed chairman of the Strategic Rail Authority [ [http://observer.guardian.co.uk/business/story/0,,581954,00.html Don't rail saviours look young nowadays? | Business | The Observer ] ] , & in the 2004 New Year's Honours List, he was appointed CBE [ [http://news.independent.co.uk/business/news/article26639.ece Knighthoods go to CBI's Digby Jones and OFT's John Vickers - Business News, Business - The Independent ] ] . In 2006, he was appointed CEO of National Express Group PLC.
