Manish Tiwary is from Muzaffarpur, Bihar, India. He was educated at Cambridge University, Yale University, and the United Nations University in Tokyo, Japan. He has worked for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Rome, Nepal and India and has also published articles concerning political ecology in Economic and Political Weekly.
Manish's primary interest, however, lies in cinema. He used to run the film society at Cambridge, and has made two feature length documentary films (Ramnagar, and Lo Manthang) and several shorts. Dil Dosti Etc (Love Etc) is Manish Tiwary's first feature-length film based on an original story by him.

Manish has published a book on 'Joint Forest Management Institutions' (by Ashgate [1], Uk) Manish was nominated for the best debut director award in IIFA and Percept’s Salaam-E-Comedy awards. He runs Empty pictures productions that has produced or co-produced films made by him. His father, Dr. Bibhuti Tiwary is a famous radiologist in Muzaffafarpur, Bihar while his mother Dr.Bharti Tiwary is a gynaecologist.His younger brother is also a doctor, and specializes in paediatrics. After completing schooling from Sainik School in Tilaiya, he went to Hindu College, Delhi, and graduated in Zoology.
