Jean-Louis Bruguès was born in
Bagnères-de-Bigorre , and studied at the Paris Institute of Political Studies before earning his doctorate in theology. He took his perpetual vows as a member of the Order of Friars Preachers, more commonly known as the Dominicans, onOctober 2 ,1972 , and was ordained to the priesthood onJune 22 ,1975 .Bruguès served as
prior of the Dominicanconvent s ofToulouse andBordeaux , and later prior of the Province of Toulouse. He was alsoprofessor of fundamental moral theology at the Catholic Institute of Toulouse before continuing to teach at theUniversity of Fribourg . He was a member of theInternational Theological Commission from 1986 to 2002, and in 1995 he was invited by Jean-Marie Cardinal Lustiger to preach theLent en conferences at Notre-Dame Cathedral.On
March 20 ,2000 , Bruguès was appointed Bishop of Angers byPope John Paul II . He received his episcopal consecration on the followingApril 30 from Pierre Cardinal Eyt, with BishopsJean Orchampt and ArchbishopFrançois Saint-Macary serving as co-consecrators. He was electedPresident of the Doctrinal Commission of the French Episcopal Conference in 2002.Pope Benedict XVI later named himSecretary of theCongregation for Catholic Education in theRoman Curia onNovember 10 ,2007 , as well as bestowing upon him the personal title of "Archbishop ". As Secretary, Bruguès serves as the second-highest official of thatdicastery , under Zenon Cardinal Grocholewski.External links
