Ian Campbell is a world renouned
experimentalist in the field ofmarine science s, focusing onyacht and Ship testing. He has knowledge inhydrodynamics and his specialisations include but are not limited to:
* Structural design incomposites
* Experimentalaerodynamics
* Model and full scale trials dataacquisition andinstrumentation
* HydrodynamicsCampbell also has a keen interest in sailing himself including, racing Mirror dinghies over a number of years at Spinnaker SC. He built Mirror 69667 "Bold Forester" from a kit in 1995, winning the UK Eastern Area championship that year and qualifying for the UK team sailing at the 1995 World Championships in
Pembroke .He is currently a senior engineer at the world renouned Wolfson Unit for Marine Technology and Industrial Aerodynamics, which is situated on the campus of the
University of Southampton . He is also a lecturer in the Maritime Engineering Sciences department in experimental methods.Campbell was senior scientist for the Americas Cup team '
Luna Rossa Challenge ' during the 32nd Americas Cup. The team was impressive in beating joint favouritesBMW Oracle Racing yet lost in the Finals toEmirates Team New Zealand although Campbell was very happy to have been give the opportunity to work at the highest competitive level in modern yacht racing.Campbell has also published several academic papers within his field including a report concerning 'Development of the structural requirements in the Volvo Open 70 rule version 2', along with numerous research trials for classification societies,
Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) etc., most notably an investigation into the keel failure of the yacht 'Hooligan V'.References
