Glorious Stakes

The Glorious Stakes is a Group 3 flat horse race in the United Kingdom open to thoroughbreds which are four-years-old or above. It is run over a distance of 1 mile and 4 furlongs (2,414 metres) at Goodwood Racecourse, and it takes place annually during the Glorious Goodwood meeting in late July or early August.

It was first run in 1979, and it was initially known as the Alycidon Stakes. This was in honour of the racehorse Alycidon, whose victories included the Goodwood Cup in 1949. It was originally a conditions race open to three-year-olds or above, and it was given Listed status in 1985.

In 1987 the title was changed to the Alycidon Glorious Stakes, which was shortened to the present name two years later. In 1993 it was restricted to horses aged four-years-old or above, and it became a limited handicap race with weights ranging from 8st-7lb to 9st-7lb.

The Glorious Stakes reverted to being a conditions race in 2004. It was promoted to Group 3 status in 2008.
