The International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology ISPE [http://www.pharmacoepi.org/] was launched officially by Stanley A. Edlavitch in 1989 during the 5. International Conference on Pharmacoepidemiology (ICPE) in Minneapolis. At the moment this is the only international acting society dealing with the topics of pharmacoepidemiology, pharmacovigilance and drug safety. The society has organized yearly conferences since its foundation. The 24th International Conference on Pharmacoepidemiology took place in 2008 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The society's office is located in Bethesda, Maryland. The ISPE executive secretary is Mark Epstein. One of the former presidents of ISPE was Jerry Avorn. The present president is Yola Moride from the University of Montréal, Faculty of Pharmacy, Canada. Members of the Society mostly come from academia, pharmaceutical industry, Contract Research Organizations and governmental institutions (e.g. FDA, NIH, EMEA, BfArM, Robert Koch Institute (RKI) [http://www.rki.de] ) acting als drug regulators. The official journal of the society is "Pharmacoepidemiology and Drug Safety" which is indexed in MEDLINE and the regularly edited newsletter "Scribe" is available on the above mentioned website of ISPE.
