- Andrews Glacier
Andrews Glacier is a
cirque glacier located on the east side of Andrews pass inRocky Mountain National Park .Neighboring peaks are Taylor and Shark Tooth (well known for rock climbing). Hikers should start early, and keep an eye on the clouds for warning signs. Even with the littlest rain, Andrews glacier becomes a daunting death trap. In June 1968, an unknown male climber was found below andres glacier after he slipped and was knocked unconcsious. In July 27, 1985 Roy Curret lost control while sliding down the glacier and caught some rocks, impacting his sides and damaging his foot. June 14, 1990 an unknown female lost control, fracturing her fibula. September 16, 1995, Charles Bailey lost control and his ice axe, and impacted rocks at the base of the glacier, suffering severe head injuries, and was flown out by helicopter. August 2, 2004 Richard Mercado impacted rocks, sustaining head injuries, he was flown out by helicopter. Hiking poles, crampons or ice axes are strongly suggested to aid climbers wishing to summit. Andrews glacier is deceiving, with many false summits. However, with a steady pace the summit could be a breeze for intermediate hikers. At the top is a sight worth the climb.
